Fortunately for me, the artist was Jerry Uelsmann. He continues to inform the current generation of students and working artists alike. Paris Changing: Revisiting Eugene Atget's Paris [Hardcover]

Last summer I saw the Atget exhibit at the Bibliotheque Nationale, which was a marvelous passage through a lost time. This book matches some of those absorbing old photos with photos of the same location taken today. I think it's a fascinating book and I can lose myself in the nuances while comparing the photos. This pasttime may not be to everyone's taste, but I highly recommend the book to thoughtful people who enjoy looking at things.

Superbly written and organised. Assumes some knowledge of black and white (but not a lot). Gives detailed "how-to" for most everything you might want to do. For example: Toning of prints is covered in spots throughout, and there's also a chapter on the subject. In the chapter, use of brand name toners is described. They tell you how to tone the print in a step-by-step manner. Then, they also tell you how to make your own chemicals, provide safety notes, some words of wisdom from experience, and what's not important too. In all, this book will help advance a beginner and teach some new tricks to advanced photographers.

Small Town America [Hardcover]

Though published in 1994 and photographed in small town America I can say that three of the places David Plowden visited are still on the map and thanks to Google's Street View I've been able to see the same shot he saw in Frederick, South Dakota, Janesville, Minnesota and Council Grove, Kansas. The same buildings, railroad tracks and street furniture are still there. It's nice to know that these places still exist though admittedly they might be facing a slow decay.

The 111 lovely photos really do capture the feel of towns away from the strip malls, housing sub-divisions, freeways and the rest of visual progress. Plowden has managed to capture a quietness and honesty that seems to exist in these places. I've looked through these photos several times over the years and I always close the book with the feeling that it is just one place. The editorial flow of images is just perfect to suggest Anytown USA. From Main Street with its railroad tracks, exterior and interiors of small shops, a bank, library, pre-1950 housing and inside rooms, small commercial concerns (and sometimes large grain elevators) to the few portrait shots, they all work so wonderfully well.

David Plowden has produced twenty or so books, with a constant theme, it seems to me, of capturing the ruggedness of a slightly past America. 'Small town America' covers this theme brilliantly.

If you are just discovering Plowden's work have a look at A Handful of Dust: Disappearing America, published in 2006 and it continues the theme of 'Small town America'. The 1997 published Imprints: David Plowden : A Retrospective, has 179 duotone photos selected from forty years of his work photographing the US.

Very little information about the practice of painting (as opposed to tinting; there is a difference) photography has been available. This book covers incredible ground, pulling together material from advertisements, photography texts, archives and collections in order to present an overview of the climate, practice, and production of painted photography. Most other material extant focuses on individual artists who happened to overpaint their photographs, or of particular artworks which are photographs that have been painted on. Henisch shows the existence of a trend in early photography which seems to have been relegated to the sidelines as an analomy or as an isolated practice.
This is an incredible work, well - written, and evocative of Henisch's broad scope of scholarship.

Architecture under Construction [Hardcover]

This is essentially a photo album on metropolitan buildings during their construction period. It is a large format book which is beautifully printed on acid free paper and bound nicely. All the photos are in black and white. Each page holds a single photo (with perhaps a single exception at the beginning). A quite informative foreword (by Joseph Rosa) accompanies the photos. The compositions range from almost purely abstracts (p17) to essentially documentary ones (?p67) although I dare say most can be read as abstractions of a varying degree. The afterword by the author, describing the shooting conditions, is a pleasure to read!

"Abstract monochromes of naked or partly covered constructions" may not sound particularly inviting for many potential readers, I guess. Still, I have found most of the images produced using a large format film camera to be really beautiful; in composition, framing and tonality. If you wonder how a study of verticals, horizontals and diagonals can be this satisfying and even intriguing, just turn a few pages.
